Home From A Honeymoon In France

Yes, my son and his new bride recently returned from their honeymoon in southern France, where we were able to arrange a home exchange for them for two weeks.  What an experience for the two of them to be able to have thanks to HomeExchange.com!

Two Foodies In France Enjoying Some Gigantic Crepes

A FRENCH WELCOME
Giles, the owner of the the vacation beach cottage located in Messanges, met Van and Megan upon their arrival with a home cooked French dinner!  Yes, the owner provided dinner for them after their long flight from California and then a three hour drive to the house.  What a wonderful welcome!  After dinner and showing them around the house, giving them lots of suggestions for places to go and things to see, Giles left them to enjoy their first night in France as husband and wife.

SAN SEBASTIAN AND BORDEAUX
Having a home base in Messanges for two weeks gave Megan and Van the opportunity to not only explore the immediate area but allowed them to travel to Bordeaux for two nights, as well as to San Sebastian, Spain for two nights.  Since they did not have to spend a cent for their home in Messanges they were able use the money saved to visit the other areas, touring the wineries of Bordeaux, and being the foodies they both are, spending quite a bit on some amazing Michelin starred feasts in San Sebastian.

 Messanges Is Conveniently Located Between
San Sebastian and Bordeaux

Basque Style Tapas Called Pintxos

FRENCH BEACH TOWN
Little did I know when I arranged this home exchange that Messanges is one of the surfing hot spots of Europe.  Megan and Van were unfortunately not able to spend too much time at the beach because of the weather, but on their last day in France they were able to use the gift certificate Megan's aunt had given them for a private surfing lesson at Messanges Surf School.  What a treat, to be learning how to surf from a world class surfer on the coast of France.  Great gift idea Tari!!

California Kids Surfing in France

A NEW FRIEND MADE, AS WELL AS A WONDERFUL EXCHANGE
After Megan and Van's first meeting with Giles they happened to run into him on the beach where he  enjoyed hanging out while his wife and children were away visiting relatives.  They thoroughly enjoyed getting to know him more and feel that he will be a friend they will stay in contact with for many years to come.  A key to this successful exchange I feel was not only all of the contact I had with Giles before the exchange, but also the amount of time Megan and Van spent on Skype with Giles and his wife Virginie prior to the trip. While Giles and his family are not planning on coming to our home at Reserva Conchal in Costa Rica for a year or more, when they do decide to come we will certainly try to extend the same hospitality to them which they extended to Van and Megan while at their lovely beach cottage in the south of France.

New Best Friend Giles
A SPECIAL GIFT
Just remember, even if you may not be able to travel to a foreign country nor have the desire to do so, maybe someone else you love would enjoy a trip of a lifetime thanks to a home exchange you set up. And, surprisingly often times the yearly cost to join a home exchange network is less than one night's stay in a hotel room!  Give it a try, and see what it's like for you, or someone special, to vacation and live like a local.

Repeat Exchanges For The Places We Love

After five years of home exchanges, with twenty exchanges made through Homeexchange.com under our belt, and having saved over $37,000 while vacationing, we now find ourselves returning to favorite locations, as well as continuing to visit and explore new destinations.  This adds another benefit to home exchanging - returning to a city, or even a home, you already know and with which you feel very comfortable.   We don't waste time trying to figure out where the best restaurants, stores, and golf courses are, and are able to jump right into a vacation knowing what we want to do and where we want to go once we arrive.

Welcome Back To Scottsdale, Arizona

We had stayed in in Scottsdale a year ago when we went to watch our daughter play waterpolo for the San Francisco Olympic Club in a masters tournament held at Arizona State University, and decided this year to return to watch the team play again, as well as to enjoy a few days of desert golf.  Since Scottsdale is a very spread out community we decided to try a different area this time and found this gorgeous desert home located about twenty minutes from the ASU pool, and close to numerous golf courses.  This home, unlike the one we exchanged for last year which was a second home, was Lynda and her husband's primary residence.  We have always tried to stay away from primary residence exchanges as they seem more difficult to coordinate and sometimes seem cluttered and inappropriate for an exchange.  However, we could not have been more wrong about Lynda's beautiful home!  I felt like I was in a luxury resort with elegant decore, an amazing back yard with pool and spa, an outdoor living room, and views out over the desert.

Just One Of The Little Spots To Enjoy A Good Book In This Lovely Desert Oasis

Linda and her husband thoroughly enjoyed their week at our home in Lake Tahoe, skiing and playing in the snow, while we enjoyed their Arizona sunshine for the week.  We have even agreed to make this a repeat exchange next year.  We have come to thoroughly enjoy the Scottsdale area, having surprisingly fallen in love with the desert, and are looking forward to making this an anual trip without having to buy a home there to enjoy it!

A Return Trip To The Palm Springs Area

We love to golf, and many of our vacations are centered around playing at beautiful golf courses.  We decided to return to the Palm Springs area again after having exchanged for a wonderful place last year in La Quinta, located right on the PGA West Golf Course.  I contacted the owner of that home again to inquire about another exchange, but unfortunately he had sold the home, so we looked for another place in the desert to make an exchange.  We found a home in the community of Rancho Mirage in a gated subdivision, but not on a golf course.  It proved to be large and very comfortable, but certainly not up to the same standards as the one we had stayed at the previous year.  This home is used mainly as a rental property, so, like other rental homes we have exchanged for in the past, it did not have the personal details and care that a vacation home or a main home has.

The JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort Golf Course
Even though the home was not quite what we expected, we enjoyed a lovely week of golf at some spectacular golf courses, such as Silverrock in La Quinta and the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort Golf Course in Rancho Mirage, and look forward to returning to the area next year to play these courses again, without having to buy a home of own in the desert.

Returning To Our Favorite Exchange On Balboa Island

Last year we exchanged for a charming cottage on Balboa Island in Orange County, California which has proven to be our very favorite exchange so far.  We were in Orange County for a week looking at wedding venues for my son's wedding to be held there in June of 2012, and Maria and her husband, who live in their Balboa cottage full time, spent two weeks in our ocean view condo in Costa Rica, telling us we could return when ever we wished to spend another week at their home.  We decided to take them up on their offer and will be returning next month to spend a week there during the actual wedding celebrations in Orange County.  I can't wait to return to this special home on such a unique island in Southern California.  I already know that I can walk one block to Starbucks, two blocks for an amazing Italian dinner, drive over the bridge into all of the shopping centers of Orange County, take the ferry over to the beach, take a long morning stroll around the complete island, and sit on my front patio while chatting with the friendly neighbors.  Feels like I'm coming home!

Some things I have learned after making twenty home exchanges:
  • First homes, as well as second homes, can make excellent exchanges
  • Rental homes are fine for exchanges, but often not as nice as primary or vacation homes
  • There are lots of wonderful people with lovely homes just waiting to make an exchange
  • Everyone should give this a try!!

A Home With A Waterfall In Capitola

In late 2010 we received another interesting exchange offer through Homeexchange.com:

LISTING PROPOSED FOR EXCHANGE:
Luxurious, Ocean-View, Villa with Hot-Tub, Sauna and more!

Your Lake Tahoe home looks gorgeous!  We would be thrilled to do an exchange (non-simultaneous is fine) with our home in the Santa Cruz area on the sunny side of the Monterey Bay.  Please let us know if you're interested.  We are especially interested in going to Lake Tahoe in the winter, and our first choice would be New Years if by a remote chance it is still available.  We'd also be happy to trade anytime in the Winter or Spring.

Kindest Regards,
Jeremy & Randy

Well as Jeremy and Randy had guessed, our Lake Tahoe home was occupied over New Years 2011, not by renters, but by our son and his friends who had an amazing time in the best snow that Tahoe had received in many years.  However, the rest of the season was available and Jeremy decided upon a three day weekend later in January to enjoy some skiing over his birthday.

Tahoe Home In January
They had a wonderful weekend at our home with plenty of snow, and even asked if they could come back for another exchange at a later date. We decided to visit the Santa Cruz area in the fall when the sun shines brightly with hopefully little fog over the Monterey Bay, and would let them know at a later date if we wished to do more exchanges.

In October we decided to visit Jeremy's "ocean view villa" in Soquel (next door to Santa Cruz), and invited my daughter Gillian and her friend who live in San Francisco to join us. We decided to arrive on Friday to play a round of golf before we got to the house, and Gillian would join us on Saturday afternoon to spend the night with us.  Early Friday morning we packed up the old faithful Travelair and flew 45 minutes down to the Watsonville Airport, where there was no fog, and lot of sun!  Flying into the Monterey area can be tricky, as more likely than not there is fog, but this weekend was perfect, just as we had hoped when we picked the October date.

After playing a challenging round of golf at the beautiful Seascape Golf Course in Aptos we drove over to our new home.  Even though we had seen pictures of the house, which looked wonderful, I was nervous, as I always am, whenever we pull up to our exchange homes, not exactly sure what we will be getting.  We found the villa, which was a located on a hill with an extremely steep driveway (sorry about the bumper, Hertz Rental Car!) and entered the home to find it everything we had hoped for, including an indoor Koi pond and waterfall.

Living Room With Beautiful Views And Indoor Koi Pond
Multi Tered Home
It had four stories with lots of stairs, but gorgeous decks and views, beautifully decorated and immaculately clean. Jeremy had been concerned that the deck which their hot tub was located on had started leaking, so they had to tear out the hot tub and work on the deck, so we would not have use of the hot tub, but I assured him that it would not bother us at all, and we could always use the sauna in the master bedroom instead!
Master Bath Tub/Shower
After exploring the home and taking a shower in the unusual tub/shower in the master bathroom, we headed off to one of Jeremy's dinner recommendations, Michael's On Main, in Aptos, where we had a lovely dinner on the deck listening to a classic oldies band.  Felt like we had traveled back in time to Santa Cruz during the 60's.

Michaels On Main in Aptos
On Saturday we decided to play golf at Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey, about a 25 minute drive from where we were staying and had another lovely day, though the fog did stick around for most of the round of golf.
Golfing At Del Monte Golf Course
Gillian and Anthony arrived shortly after we returned from playing golf and we all enjoyed wine and cheese on the deck as the sun set over the bay before heading out to dinner at the Shadowbrook Restaurant in Capitola.

Gillian On Our Deck Enjoying Cheese And Wine

Shadowbrook Restaurant Cable Car Ride Down The Hill

Shadowbrook is a must try if you are in the area, but save your pennys, as it is not cheap!  Located on the Soquel Creek in Capitola, one may choose to take the little cable car down the hill to the restaurant or walk the lovely path surrounded by blooming gardens and lights.  I believe the restaurant, open since 1947, has four levels terraced down the hillside once you get off of the cable car, all with views of the creek and gardens.  And of course I can't forget about the wonderful food served here, as well as the unique environment from which to enjoy it.

Zelda's On The Beach
Sunday morning rolled around, and in the fall that means 49er football, so off we drove to the cute beach town of Capitola to find a place to eat breakfast and watch the game.  Zeldas On The Beach was the place to be!  Even though we had to be inside to watch the game, we were still able to enjoy the views of the seagulls and children playing on the beach on a warm October day while watching our team win a great game.

The Colors of Capitola
After a walk around Capitola we ended the day on the roof top bar/restaurant of The Wharf House, listening to more great 60's music, enjoying the sunshine, a beer, and of course some freshly caught sea food.  What a great way to end a lovely weekend on the Monterey Bay.

The Wharf House Entertainment
We just might have to take Jeremy up on his offer to do another exchange.  One could get use to this kind of weekend, only a short 45 minute flight from home.

Exchanging For A Honeymoon

No, I am not going on a honeymoon . . . . mine was 36 years ago!  But my son Van, and his future wife, Megan, who are getting married in two months were talking about honeymoon locations last year when I thought about the possibilities of finding a home exchange for them.  They jumped at the idea and proceeded to go online and check out all of the amazing locations available to them around the world on Homeexchange.com.  Over 40,000 listing in 147 countries.  Now that's a lot to choose from!

Van and Megan decided they would like to visit San Sebastian in the Basque country of Spain where they could enjoy the new gourmet cuisine it has become famous for, as well as the traditional tapas in the old quarter, the beach, art museums, and the spanish countryside.  Unfortunately there were not a lot of properties to choose from, but I  was able to send out ten exchange offers eight months before their wedding to homes in San Sebastian and the surrounding countryside of Spain and waited to see what would come back.  I only received one potential exchange response.

Apartment In San Sebastian Spain

However, the one response I received was Van's favorite property.  Chema owned two apartments in this lovely historic apartment building in the middle of San Sebastian, within walking distance to the beach, and was interested in a possible exchange for our Costa Rica condo.  We all thought this would be perfect, but it proved to be too good to be true, as Chema decided a month later that he was no longer interested in an exchange.  Now I was sent back to the drawing board to start broadening my search.

In the meantime, one day I received the following exchange offer:

Hello,
We are a french family and we are very interested to know Costa Rica (we love the tropical climate and often preserved nature and human beings met in these countries). Wonderful land , we are sure !
Your ad draws our\'s attention and seems very interesting.
We live in south west of France (in \"les Landes\" , a preserved region) near the atlantic ocean (3 min by car / 10 min by bike.  We have done 4 exchanges for three years and all of them were wonderful.
We are searching an exchange (simultaneous or not) during this year 2012 : between 17/18 of april to 01 of May.

Thank you very much to have payed attention to this mail and we are waiting for the answer . See you soon.
Best regards
GILLES AND VIRGINIE

I immediately located where Gilles and Virginie's home was on a map  and realized that it was about an hour from San Sebastian, Spain,  where Van wished to stay.  I asked Van and Megan if they would be interested in Southern France instead of Northern Spain and they said of course!  Another exchange was now set into motion!
The Proposed French Cottage

I explained to Gilles and Virginie that this exchange would be for my son and his new bride and asked if that would be acceptable to them.  They were very happy to hear from me, agreed to the exchange, and asked to Skype with me in order to get to know each other better.  After a 45 minute conversation via Skype I felt like Gilles and Virginie were now my new friends.  They were very excited to have Van and Megan stay at their home, wanted to meet them upon their arrival to show them around, and give them tourist information about the area.  They were also excited to be able to return to Costa Rica where they had been several years before, and this time to bring their children with them.

Sunset At Messanges, France

In eight weeks Van and Megan will be traveling to the little village of Messanges, France to enjoy this sunset, some Bordeaux wine, lots of wonderful French food, explore the Basque region of Spain and France, and have a honeymoon of a life time, all thanks to a home exchange offer from across the other side of the world.  Stay tuned for pictures of their trip when they return. I'm sure there will be lots!

More Southern Delicacies In South Carolina

Grits and collards anyone?  Yes, we traveled back to South Carolina last fall for another wonderful exchange, and of course some good old fashioned southern cuisine was at the top of the list!  We came to visit our daughter Whitney again who was living in Mount Pleasant, just outside of Charleston and we were able to make a delightful seven night exchange for a waterfront home in Isle Of Palms, a beautiful beach town located between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, twelve miles from downtown Charleston.  Homeexchange.com came through for us again, and we were able to make this wonderful exchange with Paula and her family, who decided that they would love to go to Costa Rica for a week during their daughter's spring break from school.

Certainly Not A California Menu!

Our home this time in South Carolina was located directly on the Intracoastal Waterway and also included a boat dock, which proved to be an excellent place to enjoy evening cocktails while watching the numerous boats and yachts cruise by.

It is also where we learned how to catch crab!

And cook it too!!  Paula had left the crab cage on the dock with directions to bait it with raw chicken, so we gave it a try. Just wish we had caught more, as it was delicious once we figured the process out!

Our island home had four bedrooms and plenty of room for not only Whitney to stay with us for most of the week, but for our friends from Florida who drove up to see us in South Carolina and spent two nights with us.  That is my very favorite part of home exchanges - the opportunity to share our home with friends and family and enjoy them in such relaxing environments.  I would never had invited my friends for a visit if we had been in a hotel room.

Whitney gave us all a tour of historic downtown Charleston and we enjoyed a lovely time with old friends.

The owners of our home left us their small boat to use while we were there, which was a wonderful addition to the home exchange, and which enabled us to cruise down the waterways and view the multiple homes and docks dotting the shoreline. The Intracoastal Waterway runs for most of the length of the Eastern Seaboard, from New Jersey, where it connects with the Atlantic Ocean, then all the way south around the Gulf of Mexico to Texas.  We only went a couple of miles, but some of the large yachts we saw had come from as far as Massachusetts, and looked to be headed south to Florida for the winter.

Our home exchange in our island home in South Carolina was once again a success!  A gracious southern home, a boat with a dock, wonderful food, and of course the very best part, spending time with my daughter!  If you haven't yet tried a home exchange vacation you don't know what you are missing.  After fourteen exchanges under our belt in the United States we are now looking for exchanges in Europe for next year, and are looking forward to some fabulous new experiences!

An Exchange To Sunriver, Oregon

One Of The Four Sunriver Golf Courses With Amazing Views
Last summer we decided a trip up north to the resort community of Sunriver, Oregon would be a nice way to spend a week. With the beauty of the mountains, rivers and golf courses this central Oregon community has to offer, as well as a private air strip for Mark to fly our airplane into, it would be perfect!  Of course the first thing to do was to get on Homeexchange.com and see if I could find an exchange, as we never stay in hotel rooms anymore if we can help it at all.  There were several homes offered for exchange but only one seemed like somewhere we would enjoy staying.  We were fortunate that Hailey and Terry decided that they would enjoy staying at our home in Costa Rica too and another exchange was made!

Not Our Plane, But A Great Little Airport To Fly Into

Part of this exchange included the use of Haley and Terry's Jeep Cherokee to use while we were staying in their home.  After flying into the Sunriver Airport we found the Jeep parked right outside the gate with a full tank of gas and directions to our new home away from home.  What a great extra perk to this exchange, which we certainly appreciated. I know that people who exchange in other countries have difficulty trading cars, as their insurance does not cover others driving their vehicles, but in the U.S. this doesn't seem to be the case and many people offer to include a car in the exchange.  We have never been able to offer this as we do not have a car at either of our vacation homes, but certainly enjoy the opportunity to use one at other homes when offered! Be sure to ask about this option when requesting an exchange and check out the car exchange contract which Homeexchange.com has on their site if needed.

Our Home Away From Home

A Warm Cozy Living Room

Our Master Bedroom Which Opened Onto The Private Hot Tub

Sunriver is a wonderful vacation spot which can include mountain biking in the surrounding mountains and forests, or leisurely biking on the miles of bike paths throughout the community, horseback riding, kayaking on the Deschutes River or Cascade Lakes, rafting, paddle-boarding, hiking and golf in the summer, while skiing and snowshoeing are fun activities in the winter.  It is a wonderful family destination where we use to vacation with our children when they were young, but now were able to enjoy it in a different manner on our own. Of course this meant a lot of time golfing on the four different golf courses Sunriver has to offer, and which we never had time to do when we were vacationing with three young children.

Our Golfing Buddies

After a week in Sunriver in our own home, we had become very comfortable, and of course it was difficult to leave such a lovely area. Before leaving we washed Haily's Jeep she had left us to use, filled it with gas, and returned it to the airport parking location where we had found it seven days earlier. This exchange proved to be another success, with us enjoying our week in Sunriver, and Haily and Terry enjoying their ten night stay in tropical Costa Rica.  We have now done  fourteen exchanges over the last four years and only one was not as expected, so we of course are looking forward to the next exciting location!  Stay tuned to see where that might be.

Waterpolo And Golf In Sunny Arizona

The Beauty of Arizona
Another Waterpolo tournament was on the horizon, and this time it was to be at Arizona State University in Tempe, a suburb of Phoenix in April of 2011.  Our daughter Gillian would be playing for the San Francisco Olympic Club  in a two day men and women’s masters tournament and we decided that it would be a great time to fly out to Arizona to cheer on the team and stay a few more days to enjoy some spring time golf in the desert. Once again I went on line to Homeexchange.com to look for a place to stay. Little did we know in October when we decided upon this weekend to travel to Arizona that Sacramento would have experienced the coldest, wettest March in a long time, and that we would be very ready for some Arizona sunshine.

After sending out several of my standard email requests for exchanges in the Phoenix area I received two replies from homeowners in the area who were both interested in an exchange, one for our Costa Rica condo and one for the Lake Tahoe cabin.  Both homes looked lovely, with one even offering to include the use of his car during the exchange.  It was a difficult decision to make, but we settled on Liz's golf course home because of the location on the highly regarded Troon North Golf Courses.

Troon North Golf Course

Hi Shelley -
We really love your Tahoe place and location for a week for a summer vacation.  My family lives in Sacramento so we could visit them too.I know you have options. Our Scottsdale home is still open for April that week before and after your daughter's waterpolo weekend at ASU. There is also a nice resident golf discount of about 25-35% off the regular high season price.  Troon has 2 golf courses, Pinnacle and Monument and both are two of the best in Scottsdale. All of our guests that come back come for the warmth primarily and for the golf secondarily.

Cheers,
Liz
Liz's Lovely Home In Scottsdale

After several emails back and forth to learn more about Liz’s home and for her to learn more about our location in Tahoe the exchange was finalized. Liz sent us four pages of information about places to shop, eat, and most importantly where to golf in the North Scottsdale area, and I did the same regarding our Tahoe home. Providing this type of information makes for an enjoyable stay and is always helpful when arriving at an unknown destination.

On April 1st after a long, rainy March, Mark and I happily loaded up our Beechcraft Travel Air with our golf clubs and flew out to Arizona. It was a beautiful flight down the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys and over the mountains into the Antelope Valley of southern California where the vivid display of wild flowers could be seen even from 9,000 feet in the air.

Flying Over The Wild Flowers In The Antelope Valley

Flying Past Big Bear Mountain
Flying into the Palm Springs area where we were headed to make a fuel stop and grab some lunch, we flew through the still snow covered mountains of Big Bear and down into the Coachella Valley, where the temperature was now 100 degrees! We quickly shed some clothing, headed for a quick lunch, and then were back in the air for our one and half hour flight to Scottsdale.
Flying Into The Phoenix Metropolis (the airport's out there somewhere!)
Flying into Phoenix after flying for over an hour across the barren California and Arizona deserts is always a surprise. The urban sprawl seems to go on for ever when viewed from the air, but with the use of Marks new navigational equipment he had recently purchased for the plane we were able to locate the Scottsdale Airport quite easily.

After picking up our rental car which was brought out to our plane, we drove ten minutes to the local grocery store Liz had suggested we use, stocked up on our supplies, and within a few miles arrived at Troon North Golf Club where our new home was located. The home was located in a gated community with a gate coded entrance. Liz had provided the code for the gate, and the key to the front door was in a lock box to which we also had the code. We have found that many exchangers who also rent their homes have a lock box on their doors where the renters or exchangers are able to get the key easily without having to mail the keys back and forth. This is something I am considering doing at Tahoe as well.
Our Patio View
The home proved to be lovely and well taken care of, though we wished that the patio and upstairs decks were larger from which to enjoy the beautiful weather and views of the mountains and cactus. We had been spoiled with our stay in Palm Springs several months earlier with the large beautiful patio, pool and spa. Another lesson learned - ask about the size of the patio and try to have a pool at the home if it is in the desert. The community pool located down the street was fine, but sitting around your own pool just can’t be beat!

The following day was the beginning of the waterpolo tournament at ASU, with Saturday hitting a high temperature of 100 degrees on the pool deck. We really didn’t mind the heat though, as we were just so happy to be out of the cold and rain of northern California. It proved to a great tournament for Gillian and the Olympic Club, who finished in first place after two days of play, and the Morgan waterpolo groupies loved every minute of it.
Love These Waterpolo Games!

The Olympic Club Champions!
After spending a few hours with Gillian on Sunday before she flew back to San Francisco we headed back to our golf course home in Scottsdale for the rest of the week.
The Golfers Enjoying Sunny Arizona
Golf was now on the agenda and we were able to receive the homeowner’s golf discount on both courses of Troon North, which is another added benefit of home exchanges. The first day of play we ran into a celebrity charity golf tournament on the Monument Course sponsored by the old rocker, Alice Cooper, who without all of his makeup on now just looks like an old guy with a long black ponytail! A good golfer though. After making our way around the tournament we had a lovely day of golf on Monday, and on Wednesday played the other course, Pinnacle. The desert cactus and boulders made for spectacular scenery, which is one of the reasons I enjoy the game of golf. In between golf games we explored the towns of Cave Creek, the old west town created during the Arizona gold rush, and Carefree, which was a planned community started in the 1960‘s, both of which are built up against the jagged Arizona mountains.

Even though one of the benefits of home exchanges is having a fully equipped kitchen, we find that except for breakfasts, which we always have at the house, for most of the other meals we like finding new restaurants to try out and enjoy. Unfortunately in Scottsdale it took us a few days to find some places we were impressed with.

Cactus Growing Out Of The Roof Of Barbecue Daves
Tonto's Bar and Grill

The little barbecue joint, Barbecue Dave’s, in the cowboy town of Cave Creek had some wonder barbecued pulled pork sandwiches, and along with the baked beans made for an amazing, inexpensive lunch which rivaled the barbecue we had had in South Carolina. Our favorite dinner place had to be the last night we were in Arizona at Tonto’s Bar and Grill, also located in Cave Rock on the beautiful old golf course of Rancho Manana. Now this is what an Arizona western style restaurant should be. Elegant, yet rustic and warm with spectacular food. We just needed Tonto, Trigger, and Roy to help us believe we were back in the old west. If you are ever in the area this is a must place to visit.

After the week in Northern Scottsdale we had planned to fly further north to the beautiful town of Sedona, and then on up to the Grand Canyon. We had scheduled a jeep tour of the famous Sedona red rocks and Indian cave dwellings followed the next day by a helicopter ride inside and around the Grand Canyon. However the weather would not cooperate, with thunderstorms and snow showers predicted for Sedona and The Grand Canyon the days we planned on being there. We decided that we had better head back to California on Friday before the weather became a factor and took off for Palm Springs. Again, the weather decided not to cooperate with us, with fast moving clouds developing after we departed Scottsdale with freezing levels becoming a problem.
Flying Through The Clouds Leaving Arizona
We dodged and weaved, got bounced around quite a bit, but land safely eventually in Palm Springs, where we were planning on stopping for fuel and a quick lunch before heading back to Sacramento. However the clouds which were supposed to be in Arizona were now instead coming over the mountains towards Palm Springs with the freezing level dropping quickly. Hail and snow was predicted, but the wind was blowing fiercely and we thought the storm clouds would quickly blow through. We were mistaken. After waiting five hours in the very lovely Atlantic Aviation terminal in Palm Springs we decided that we would have to spend the night in the Palm Springs area and hoped that we would be able to leave the following morning.
The Desert Hot Springs Resort - A Trip Back To The 60's!
The Desert Springs Resort and Spa, located about 15 miles from the airport was the only spot around with an available room. Welcome back to the 1960’s! At one time this place must have been quite the place to stay with its’ large swimming pool, several large outdoor spas, massage rooms, and saunas, but it has certainly seen better days. I felt like I had stepped back in time, and it was quite an abrupt change from where we had been staying for the last week. Saturday morning we quickly got back to the airport and were able to take off, happily finally landing in Sacramento three hours later. Home at last!
